The Life and Times of a Rock

Peter gets a bad rap sometimes.

The guy Jesus personally nicknamed “Rock” – yes, the Son of Almighty God has a penchant for nicknames – is sometimes considered a foot-in-mouth annoyance, a guy who for so long just didn’t get it. Sometimes, this same attitude is projected on the twelve disciples as a whole.

But, let’s really think about Peter. The fact that not only did Jesus choose him out of so many potential followers, but also honestly spoke these defining words to him: “You are rock, and on you I will build my church.” Was Jesus just being nice, giving Simon an empty compliment and a sweet nickname, or was he being serious. Does Jesus not know what rocks are?

On this episode of The DBC Podcast, I sat down with our always insightful senior pastor, Allen Jackson, to discuss the character of Simon Peter in greater detail. Corresponding to the previous day’s sermon that Allen gave regarding Peter’s restoration at the Sea of Galilee (John 21), we dug even deeper into Peter’s life, his personality, and the motivations present throughout the Gospel accounts. As we held up this enigmatic disciple to the light of examination, what we found was not only an incredibly interesting person in his own right, but a helpful example for how to deal with everything from arrogance to eagerness to failure (sometimes in that order).

Please share what you think about Simon Peter, or any other interesting tidbits you have learned about him over the years. There never seems to be a shortage of thoughts about this guy who helped establish the Church we still live and work and thrive in today. Leave a comment in the section below. I’d love to hear from you and continue the conversation.
